Labyrinth Meditation

As you walk through the Labyrinth you may make surprising discoveries. There is an incredible centering than happens, first because the walk is 1570 feet long, making eleven circuits so you have ample time to take the normal chaos inside your head and sort it out.

You may walk the Labyrinth for other than spiritual reasons, for example, often answers to knotty problems surface. And many enjoy the simple peace that this walk brings.

Some people use the walking in time as a 'clearing' or 'cleansing' time. Some confess their challenges to their Creator. Some pour out their problems to God.

[We have seen children with all the signs of ADD or ADHD begin to run into the Labyrinth, and after 3 or 4 circuits begin to pull themselves in, and slow down, and pace steadily toward the center and complete the walk.]

The beauty of the sacred geometry of the Labyrinth and the centuries old oak trees that serve as a backdrop, begins to work on your soul and connect you with your Higher Power, source of all Sprit.

Here are some tips to give you the best experience:

  • Allow yourself at least an hour, or two
  • Walk alone
  • Breathe deeply and slowly

Open all your senses-see before you, notice the birds chatting with each other, the clouds dancing in the sky, the distant sounds of coyotes, the laughter of others away in the Reserve.

Bring your focus to here and now – let thoughts of the past drift away, plans for tomorrow will be shelved for the moment. Enjoy each step, putting your feet in the path becomes almost mindless.

  • Let Go, cry if you need to cry, shout if you need to shout, Let Go
  • Notice your own being
  • Stay for a while in the center
  • Walk all the way out. [Avoid stepping over the walls]
  • Think of all you are grateful for in your life.

Some people use the center to represent their time of close connection with God. This is the time to LISTEN for direction. This is the time of wonder and awe at the handiwork of the Creator. This is the time of understanding.

Many people walk out of the Labyrinth naming each blessing in their life. Examples are: birth family, spouse, health, children, calling or purpose, material things, hope, vacations, dreams... and specific events such as personal protection in dangerous situations like avoiding accidents.

If you do walk with a group, it is good to also have a common goal, such as ‘lifting up’ a particular person, or prayer for specific happening. The Labyrinth has been used on the Fourth of July, for example, for a group walk and prayer for freedom of all people in the world.
